Leadbeater Sunrise

I created this piece in a small effort to help bring recognition to the plight of the Leadbeater Possum.  The Leadbeater Possum has been officially declared an endangered species and is found only in a small area of Victoria’s state forest. In 2009 it was estimated the population of Leadbeater’s stood at approximately 2,500. But after the devastating bushfires that tore through their habitat in early 2009 the population is thought to have declined to less than 1,000.   With the loss of over 40% of their natural habitat from these bushfires, the Leadbeater possum cannot survive any further threats that could lead to further loss of their natural habitat.

As caretakers of this wonderful planet earth we have the ability to either harm of help the earth and its inhabitants. Sadly, it would seem that we are not making a terribly good job of it.

In my painting, the Baby Possum sits curled on the hollow tree trunk that has been ravaged by fire and looking down watching its mother walking along the branch. The tree not only symbolizes the ravaged habitat of the Leadbeater but you can see the new leaves springing from the branches to suggest the beginning of new life. There is a full moon waning above the mountain telling us that night time is almost over and the sun will soon rise. There is a slight tint of yellow to show the rays of sun slowing following the moon on its retreat.  The house in the back ground is alive with heart flowers growing in mother earth’s garden. This is to signify that possibility of renewal and new life and the opportunity we have to make things right for the Leadbeater possums.

As Victoria’s faunal emblem I feel strongly enough to make this small contribution to the Leadbeater cause.  My painting “Leadbeater Sunrise” will be donated to the Fundraising Art Exhibition “Stop beating around the bush” held at the world Trade Centre Melbourne from the 2nd till the 29th September.

Please come along and see the great works of art. Better still make a purchase of some fantastic art works and help make a difference to the Leadbeater’s plight.

LAND AND SEA AND THE THINGS THAT PLAY

An Exhibition by Kiwi John

29 July 2010: Bringing land and sea together through a world of vivid imaginary characters, Exhibition Underground is the newest instalment to decorate the space at the Matt Irwin Gallery in Melbourne.

A colourful showing by one of the art scenes newest names, Kiwi John’s (John Wortelboer) first solo exhibition entitled Land and Sea and the Things that Play will take viewers on a journey through iridescent worlds with his works on canvas and board, metalwork sculpture and animation.

A passionate advocate for the injustices of the refugee crisis and environmental awareness, John says his choice of imagery and materials are designed to reflect this.

“Both the recycled products I’ve salvaged from around Melbourne which form the basis of my sculptures, and the stories told in each image, are designed to stimulate conversation about some of today’s more widely debated topics,” he says.

A long way from his beginnings as a motor mechanic, John has been creating art for over twenty years focussing more solidly on it following a serious motorcycle accident ten years ago.

Describing his work as “playful and mischievous, but all above created from the heart”, Kiwi John will be showing his latest collection at the Matt Irwin Gallery for the next fortnight.
